The Curriculum
The Augustine School curriculum is inspired by an understanding of the classical liberal arts and 1,500 years of proven success. The seven liberal arts are commonly divided into the Trivium (grammar, logic, and rhetoric) and the Quadrivium (arithmetic, music, geometry, and astronomy—with modern equivalents of specialization). Historically, these liberal arts were well known for giving students the “tools of learning” - tools that help students throughout their lives no matter what their vocation. Each part of the Trivium coincides with a child's God-given developmental stages to equip them with the necessary tools for learning. Our Kindergarteners may not realize that by memorizing poetry they are developing their grammar stage skills, but this is what a classical education is all about: developing the tools our students need to learn while fostering a love of learning in the process. We intentionally plan each stage of our curriculum with the end in mind so that even our youngest students are laying a foundation to become confident and mature adults.
Early Education
Our Pre-Kindergarten program seeks to provide a warm and nurturing environment that fosters our youngest students’ innate sense of wonder and curiosity. Students are invited to love the good, learn the true, and explore the beautiful all through imaginative, hands-on play and learning. These years are integral for planting seeds of a distinct love of learning and ultimately of God - the giver of all that is good, true, and beautiful.
Lower School
The Lower School years (K-5th) encapsulate the grammar stage of the classical Trivium. It is a time of wonder, excitement, and adventure as the students discover the world around them through language. They begin with the wonder of letters that becomes a love of reading, leading them into adventures of the past, present, and future. They begin to master basic math, science, and explore the arts. The elementary years lay a spiritual, emotional, and intellectual foundation for secondary studies.
Upper School
The Upper School years hold the logic (6th-8th) and rhetoric (9th-12th) stages of the classical Trivium. An emphasis is placed upon the development of critical thinking skills as students learn to express themselves and their ideas. Students hone their inquisitive nature as they learn to reason and ask big questions of themselves, God, and the world around them. The tools of logic and rhetoric prepare them for a deep and meaningful exploration of all subjects within a Christian worldview.
