HOME > STUDENT LIFE > CULTURE & TRADITIONS

At Augustine School, we love tradition; the Western intellectual tradition is integrated in all aspects of our curriculum. But we've also developed several school traditions over the years that shape our school community and culture each year. Read more below to catch a glimpse of some of our most treasured school traditions.

 School-Wide

All Grades

  • Back to School Night

Held right before school starts, families and friends reunite to celebrate the upcoming school year. Parents and students are encouraged to visit their new classrooms, meet their teachers, drop off their supplies, hear announcements are made, and enjoy a treat. Together we kick off the school year with high spirits!

  • Convocation

Soon after the school year begins, Augustine School presents itself to God for His work at our school in the upcoming year. Families are welcome to join us as we ask God’s blessing on our school year.

  • Homecoming

Following a week-long spirit week, students join faculty, staff, parents, alumni, and friends to celebrate Augustine School Homecoming! This annual event features a Student Vs. Parent/Alum flag football tournament, food, carnival games hosted by the Upper School, bounce houses and more. Fun for the whole family!

  • Grandparents Day

We are so grateful for the investment of our grandparents in the lives of our students and community! It is our joy to host an on-campus event each year to celebrate them. Families are welcome to visit, meet our faculty, see student artwork, and more.

  • Carols & Cider

Each December, Augustine School celebrates the Christmas season by opening the campus to friends and family as we sing carols, read scripture, and enjoy warm beverages and treats.

  • Recitations

Recitations are celebrations capping off a quarter in which students gather for a public presentation of what they have recently learned. Students recite Scripture and poetry, sing hymns, and more. All families are encouraged to attend!

  • Visual Arts Open House

The beloved Visual Arts Open House invites all Augustine students and families to campus for an evening celebrating the artistic work of our students. Come enjoy an exhibition of artwork from PK-12th Grade.

  • Field Day

At the end of the school year, the entire student body comes together for a day of physical fun and challenges where students enjoy friendly competition on our school athletic fields. A fun way to say farewell for the summer!

  • Rain Come and Stay Day

    Pre-Kindergarten

This sweet annual spring tradition for our youngest Knights invites them outdoors for some joy-filled sensory play!

  • Kindergarten Celebration

    Kindergarten

Nearing the end of the year, families and students proudly celebrate the accomplishments of our Kindergarteners and the culmination of all they have learned.

  • Knighting Ceremony

    1st Grade

First-graders don their best capes and armor and are knighted into the Augustine community as they are invited to live their lives in the service of the true King, Jesus.

  • Prairie Day

    2nd Grade

Students see the world of Laura Ingles Wilder come to life with exploration and play in the spirit of her beloved book series.

  • On the 9s

    3rd Grade

Throughout the year students welcome special guests to the classroom to share a meal and practice the arts of conversation and good etiquette.

  • Tumnus Tea & Narnia Narratives

    4th Grade

To celebrate their reading of "The Lion, The Witch, and The Wardrobe," students hold a Tumnus Tea. Later in the year, they write a first-person narrative inspired by a favorite character. They conclude their study by presenting a dramatic reading in costume in front of their parents and peers.

  • Durin's Day

    5th Grade

Students gather around a bonfire, partake of a feast fit for a hobbit, and share original songs, poems, and artwork inspired by their reading of J. R. R. Tolkien.

  • Father Daughter Dance

A special night for dads and father figures to spend an evening with their daughters! Lower School girls love getting all dressed up and making memories with this evening of fun!

  • Sorting Ceremony

This special day marks a milestone for Lower School students who begin to look forward to their years in Upper School. Before their families and Upper School students, 5th graders are assigned to an Upper School house and welcomed by their new fellow house members.

Upper School

6th - 12th Grades

  • Upper School Retreat

In an effort to promote friendship between students, the Upper School takes a break from their studies in the fall for a day of outdoor team building activities on our campus.

  • Special Activities Week

A bright spot in the winter months is Special Activities Week. Upper School students have the opportunity to choose from several week-long courses offered by teachers and other community members. These courses can cover a wide range of topics and activities. Former opportunities have included music production, outdoor survival, soap-making, outdoor art, and French cooking, just to name a few.

  • Senior Symposiums

Augustine School seniors write an extensive research paper based on their chosen topic of study. As the culmination of their research, they give a formal presentation of their paper to the student body, family and friends. After presenting their thesis, they address questions from the audience and receive feedback on their work.

  • College Shirt Day

Seniors are invited to wear a shirt representing the college or university they plan to attend. Senior girls paint one of their uniform skirts according to their future school as well. A fun way for our students to celebrate what’s next!

  • Senior Feast and Senior Farewell

These beloved traditions allow for Augustine School students and faculty to say farewell, offer prayer and encouragement, and speak words of gratitude for our senior class.

  • Commencement

Augustine School holds commencement each May. Graduation is such an exciting time for students, parents, faculty and staff alike who come together to celebrate the accomplishments of our seniors and wish them well as God leads them into a new season of their lives.
